Boondocking Shore Power

October 31, 2020 by Donald Anderson

We want to use our microwave when we are boondocking in Cocoon, our Casita travel trailer. We need an inverter for that but do not want to add a new load to our single 100-amp-hour house battery.

We recently added an auxiliary battery to Campbell, our off-pavement, and tow vehicle. You can read the article about it here.

So we added a connector that enables us to use the new battery to power the inverter.

Driving Campbell recharges the auxiliary battery. When we get back to base camp, we plug the inverter into Campbell and Cocoon’s shore-power cord into the inverter.

We can use the microwave and other small appliances when we are dry camping. A second benefit is that we can use the extra power to top-off the Casita house battery.

Installation

  • The wiring is 2/0-gauge, and the connectors are rated for 350-amps.
  • All terminals are crimped and soldered.
  • The connections are sealed with adhesive heat-shrink.
  • A 300-amp self-resetting circuit-breaker protects against overloads.

The affiliate-free links below list the parts, wiring, and some tools you may need.

The gallery has pictures that show attaching the connector contacts.
